STINN BRAKKE - Bredtveit
by Berstad / Helgebostad
STINN BRAKKE - Bredtveit is a research into how to create a temporal space of freedom in movement. It happened during one week in spring 2023. The physical encounter with a group of incarcerated women at Bredtveit is at the centre of this project.
The project wants to create a space where the creativity and expressive needs already possessed by the inmates are given room and support. Berstad and Helgebostad aimed to establish a safe environment that could invite creative physical expression. This project stems from a belief that rhythm and movement can be a fast-track to making connections between people and to connect as a group, that this is something that we already carry with us in our DNA as knowledge of deep connection. It can also be a way to get in touch with ourselves and our unique qualities, strengths, the joy of movement, and our needs as individuals. We want to emphasize the body as a source of expression and aimed to facilitate a process that would encourage the inmates to activate their own desire for movement.
Musician and drummer Tibor Teskeredzic supported this aim through rhythm and sound by improvising together with the participants on his drum-kit. Illustrator Tiril Haug Johne guided the group in collective and individual drawing tasks and documented the project through her own drawings.
